The Fundamental Principles for Proximity of Islamic Denominations and the Unity of Shia and Sunni

Islamic unity is one of the characteristics of the Islamic community (Ummah) in the Qur'an and one of its very important principles. Proximity of Islamic sects means the revival of the Qur'anic principle of brotherhood and the removal of artificial psychological barriers to unity among Islamic sects. According to Islamic teachings, the proximity of Islamic sects and Islamic unity is inherently desirable and is not just a slogan or expediency. The dignity and status of man and the foundations of Islam require that the Islamic government and nation avoid any kind of division and conflict, and establish unity, cohesion and solidarity among the Islamic nation. Therefore, God Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an: "This community of yours [forms] one nation, while I am your Lord, so worship Me."(21:92). To reach this proximity and union, we should emphasize the fundamental principles and the main issues of Islam that are agreed upon by all Muslims. Believing in Tawhid (unification of God), the prophethood of the Prophet Mohammad(pbuh), the Holy Qur'an, the hereafter, the Qiblah and the love of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) are the fundamental principles of Islam that have special importance in scientific discussions among Islamic scholars. In this article, the approach of Islamic scholars and thinkers to these principles -that are in accordance with the clear text of the Holy Qur'an and the authentic hadiths- will be discussed, and the attitudes resulting from these principles to achieve Islamic unity will be examined.
